Emissions Factors

CO2 figures are per-passenger emission intensities (kg CO2-equivalent per km), including well-to-wheel lifecycle:

  • Gas car: 0.192 kg CO2e/km (average car, US/EU)
  • Electric car (EV): 0.053 kg CO2e/km (US average grid mix)
  • Bus: 0.089 kg CO2e/km per passenger (average occupancy)
  • Train: 0.041 kg CO2e/km per passenger (national rail average)
  • Bicycle: 0.005 kg CO2e/km (manufacturing and maintenance amortized)
  • Walking: 0.001 kg CO2e/km (food energy embodied emissions)
Cost Calculation
  • Gas car: (miles / mpg) * fuel price + $0.06/mi maintenance + parking
  • EV: (miles / mi per kWh) * electricity price + $0.03/mi maintenance
  • Bus / Train: fare per trip * trips per day * working days
  • Bicycle: $0.016/mi maintenance (tires, chain, tubes)
  • Walking: $0 (no operational cost)
